Astragalus Could Help Prevent Toxoplasmosis

Research suggests astragalus may help fight toxoplasmosis infection.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by a common parasite. It is one of the leading causes of death by foodborne illness in the U.S.—mostly in newly infected pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. 124

One animal study showed that astragalus improves the efficacy of a vaccine against this infection. Results showed astragalus: 69

  • Decreased the number of parasites in the body.
  • Enhanced immune response.
  • Improved survival time.

Results of a second study suggest astragalus can also improve the effectiveness of conventional drug therapy for acute infection. 125
